Day 1 – Families
Purpose: Students will be introduced to overall course. Students will learn the definitions of vocabulary words. Students will be introduced to roles of mother and father.
Interview activity - icebreaker – Have a guy and a girl volunteer. Interviewer asks questions about 6th grade, segue into human sexuality only as it relates to gender. Introduce the wordTrust Trap: An activity that illustrates trust, and the consequences of broken trust.
Jars activity – demonstrate with two jars how families work best when mom and dad both contribute to helping run a household and raise the children. The two jars set side by side represent marriage. Have children call out different tasks that their parents do to help the family. Drop tokens in mom jar or dad jar to represent how each helps the family. Demonstrate what happens when one person is left with all the responsibility of caring for the family.Vocabulary game: Help kids to identify the following vocabulary words: abstinence, marriage, commitment, trust, puberty
TV Families and Role Models: Students will learn that TV models behaviors and the importance of good role models.
Day 2 - Puberty
Purpose: To give students an understanding of the biological facts of puberty. To demonstrate the false body images portrayed by the media. To explain that puberty is a normal biological event that everyone experiences.
Students will learn the basics of the changes that take place during puberty. Males and females are separated for this lesson, and each gender will have a teacher of the same gender.
Identify various changes that take place during puberty. Stress that during this time, everyone feels awkward. Discuss the physical changes in the body as well as the emotional changes. Discuss different reproductive systems of males and females. Teacher will display a black and white transparency drawing of male and female reproductive systems. Discuss what physically happens when pregnancy occurs.
Help children to understand the following vocabulary words:
ovulation, menstruation, identical and fraternal twins, puberty,
fertilization, testosterone, estrogen,Day 3 – Refusal Skills and STD’s
Pressures: Students will learn to recognize negative pressure and its effects on relationships with peers, family, and society. Students will learn the importance of setting boundaries. The class will discuss pressures and explain that pressures come from everywhere. Given different images, students are asked to name the pressure and how they would respond to the situation. Explain that doing the right thing sometimes has negative consequences.
You Own the Word "NO": Students will pair up and practice saying no to each other. Different types of refusal skills will be shown and reviewed by the class.
What Should They Do?: Different scenarios will be reviewed and refusal skills applied to each by the class.
Ignoring Consequences?: Students will learn that there are consequences for ignoring boundaries.
STDs: Give a very brief description of S.T.D.’s. Explain that when two people are involved in sexual activity outside of faithful committed marriage there is a risk of contracting an S.T.D. Explain that S.T.D’s can cause rashes, sores, blisters, and discharges. Explain that some are caused by bacteria and some are caused by a virus. The viral S.T.D. cannot be cured with medication and you have it for life.
Day 4 – Happily Ever After & Review
Decisions: Students will learn that decisions made now can affect their future.
Shrek and Fiona: Students will watch an example of a "happily ever after".
Jeopardy game – class divides into two teams and review questions are given in the form of a jeopardy game.
