Research

Did you know that the number of sexually active high school students dropped from 54% to 48% in the early 90's to 2007 according to the CDC?  So from these statistics alone, there's something about the message of abstinence that's working.

Even with these numbers in mind, abstinence education has had some critics in recent times because of a few published studies.  What the media fails to report are the numerous abstinence programs that do work.

The I W8 Curriculum is based on the Why Know?/On Point curriculum and you can see evidence of its success here

With the Why Know?/On Point curriculum as the foundation of our program, we saw a 12% increase last year in the number of students who decided they wanted to save sex for marriage based on pre- and post-test measures.

There are also these seven peer-reviewed programs that have been successful.

Reasons of the Heart • Best Friends • Not Me Not Now • Sex Respect/Teen Aid • Postponing
Sexual Involvement (Abstinence Version) • For Keeps •  Heritage Keepers

For the above seven programs, you can see evidence of their success here.

In Georgia, where abstinence education has been mandated, they have seen a 50% drop in the teen pregnancy rate.  Choosing the Best is the program they use around the state, and you can click here to read more about its influence.

The Peers Project in Indiana is another success story.  Click here for their research.

Also, here is research presented at the 2007 Abstinence Education Evaluation Conference.  This conference featured presentations by evaluation experts and showcased papers and posters that had undergone a rigorous peer-review process.  Included are reports on around 30 abstinence programs, some with mixed results and some that were very successful.

So, what does all this information tell us?  That under the right conditions and using the right programs, Abstinence Works.
