Day 1 – Goals and Lures
Goal setting activity – Ask students to take time to identify personal goals for themselves for one year, five years, ten years, and "happily ever after". Allow time for willing students to share their goals with the class. Begin to have students think about steps they will need to take in order to reach these goals.
Lures: Begin to discuss lures. Define lures and discuss how various lures will affect them reaching their goals. Share story of how an Eskimo kills a wolf.
Fishing activity: Demonstrate with a fishing rod and lures how various things may come along that will affect whether they reach their goals or not. Talk about different stages of engaging in negative activities.
How to Catch a Wolf: Students will learn that a negative consequence is possible anytime they succomb to a "lure".
Day 2 – Refusal Skills and STDs
Refusal Skills: Students will explore messages from all directions telling them to do different things; also the lines and lies that are used to pressure them.
Hot Seat Game: Refusal skills are practiced by students and examples from media are shown.
STDs: Students will be able to identify and name seven of the most common S.T.D.’s. Students will understand that pre-marital sex puts them at risk of acquiring an S.T.D. including HIV. Students will learn the difference between viral and bacterial S.T.D.’s. Students will understand the benefits of saving sex for marriage.
Chunky Water activity – Have four students volunteer to participate. Give each student a small cup of water and an orange cracker. Ask students to chew the cracker and not swallow. Then have the student sip their water and swish water in their mouth, spitting the remainder back into their cup. Now ask students to mix their water with the other volunteers. Explain to students that when we are involved in sexual activity we are mixing body fluids with our partner. Unlike the orange crackers in the water that we can see, many STD’s cannot be seen.
Explain two types of STD’s – viral and bacterial. Explain that there is no cure for viral S.T.D.’s. Most bacterial S.T.D.’s can be treated with antibiotics. Identify most common S.T.D.’s and some of their symptoms. Explain different ways of contracting an S.T.D. Explain that abstinence from all sexual activity is the ONLY 100% way to avoid contracting an S.T.D.
Day 3 – Think for Yourself! (Media)
TV Commercial Quiz: Students will understand that they are influenced by the media.
Coke/Pepsi activity – Have two students volunteer. Blindfold each student. Have one volunteer who prefers Coke and one who prefers Pepsi. Give each blindfolded volunteer a taste test. However, give the one who prefers Coke, two cups of Coke and the one who prefers Pepsi, two cups of Pepsi. Ask each student which drink they preferred. If they are not able to determine that the drinks are the same, introduce the tactic of the power of suggestion.
Mythbusters: Students will be shown various media clips and examples to differentiate between realistic and fantasy views of moral character, marriage, sex, and love.
Day 4 - No Jerks & Abstinence Revolution
No Jerks: Students will explore relationship pitfalls through a discussion centered on a fictitious couple in our "no jerks" video. Students will be given healthy dating tips to replace patterns shown in the video. Students will recognize warning signs in a relationship. Students will be given a "map" to help guide them through the dating process.
Abstinence Revolution: Students will identify the benefits of abstinence, and learn how this decision will affect their goals for the future.
Family Feud Game: Playing this game will reveal some of the best reasons to save sex for marriage.
